Tools are usable items in both Ōkami and Ōkamiden, intended to support either Amaterasu or Chibiterasu during standard gameplay. They are commonly acquired from treasure chests, but can also be bought from merchants with yen, or demon fangs in a select few cases. Demons might also drop them after being defeated, or yield them if struck with the Thief's Glove. They are also sometimes received from characters in return for completing an objective of theirs, or by accomplishing other tasks, such as completing a devil gate trial cave.
Tools are accessed from the 'tools' section in the main menu, and can from there be used either in or out of combat, depending on their purpose (for example, you cannot use items used to heal yourself while at full health). The max limit of each item is 99, after which any more simply disappear, although you will only reach such numbers by purchasing them, regardless you can simply sell any excess back for half price. Some items, such as Gold Dust and anything bought with demon fangs, cannot be sold; once acquired they remain in the inventory until used.
Listed underneath tools are key items, which are never actually by yourself.
Mechanics[]
Exorcism Slips deal a large amount of damage in a spherical area around Amaterasu, but follow the same rules as normal damage: they cannot damage enemies that are currently invulnerable to Divine Instrument hits. Their damage is also not elemental and does not count as any brush power, and so they are ineffective against enemies which require elemental attacks to become vulnerable such as the Igloo Turtle or specific brush powers such as a blocking Crow Tengu.
Several items are active for a specific period of time, including the two types of Sake, the Vengeance Slip, and the Inkfinity Stone. These items cannot be used again until their current time limit runs out: while all four can be activated at the same time, it is not possible to activate multiple instances of one of them for multiple boosts.
Most of the ordinary tools in the inventory are carried over to a New Game+, except for the Mermaid Coins. In every playthrough, the Digging minigame in Sasa Sanctuary must be completed to make the Mermaid Coin available for purchase from merchants.
