Thunderstorm is a Celestial Brush Technique given to Amaterasu by Gekigami, the god of thunder, after restoring his statue on Oni Island. With this technique, Amaterasu is able to manipulate lightning as long as there are thunderclouds or any other source of lightning, similar to Waterspout. It is, at first, mainly used to activate switches and the like on Oni Island. However, if Amaterasu is holding a source of lightning, like an electrified key, she will be able to walk on paths that wouldn't be accessed otherwise.

When in combat, Thunderstorm can be quite useful. It is most effective in the battles of Ninetails, Lechku and Nechku, and Yami, where the first two use nine-pronged swords and the latter making his arms look similar to the swords. It is quite useful on certain enemies who require the technique for their floral finishers. Another technique, known as Thunderbolt, summons a bolt of lightning without the use of a lightning source. The technique requires drawing a slanted "Z" shape. Like Inferno's Fireburst, the larger the brushstroke, the more ink it uses up; the smallest using up three ink pots, and the largest using up nine ink pots.

Thunderbolt needs quite a prerequisite, which involves Ida, the messenger in Shinshu Field. Amaterasu must race with him three times, and win. The races themselves can only be accessed depending on how far into the story is the game. On the third race, which is achieved after defeating Ninetails, Ida will bet his Gimmick Gear and his job. Upon winning, Amaterasu will receive the gear, but won't accept Ida's job. Amaterasu must then get to Sei'an City, where a tall tower stands close by to Himiko's palace. With the use of Catwalk, she'll be able to climb the tower to the top. Inside, a man named Gen lives there, working on his masterpiece. He tells Amaterasu that his masterpiece won't be completed without the Gimmick Gear, which Amaterasu gives him. After drawing in the missing wire on the wall, Gekigami appears and bestows Thunderbolt to Amaterasu.

In a video, it is revealed that a celestial tiger cub (fired from the parent riding an arrow) and then holding the arrow in it's mouth gives Chibiterasu the Thunderstorm technique.
