Shiranui (白野威) is the historical hero/heroine of Kamiki Village from one hundred years ago, as Amaterasu's previous incarnation at full power and wielding the Solar Flare Reflector. According to the legend, when the ceremony to sacrifice a maiden to Orochi, the dreaded eight-headed serpent, drew near, a white wolf kept roaming around the village at night and was named "Shiranui" possibly for its beautiful white fur coat. Believing Shiranui to be a familiar of Orochi, a man named Nagi always attempted to challenge it but Shiranui would use her amazingly swift movements to escape from him.

On the night of the festival, Nagi disguised himself as the chosen sacrificial maiden, his beloved Nami, to approach and slay Orochi. However, his attempts were in vain because of Orochi's steel-hard hide, and Nagi was brutally injured. At the last minute, Shiranui arrived and stepped up to Orochi in a one-on-one fight to the death.

anui in the Present and the Truth

Shiranui, sensing trouble for her future self, travels through the Spirit Gate into the future where she assists Amaterasu in combating Nechku. After defeating the demon, Oki appears (fighting with Lechku). When Oki's passion drives him to try a desperate attack to end twin demons' lives, Lechku used it's power to stop time and Nechku tried to deliver a devastating blow to Oki. However, Shiranui knocked Oki out of the way and took the full brunt of the attack in Oki's stead. After Amaterasu and Oki defeat Lechku and Nechku, Shiranui travels back in time to when Amaterasu fights True Orochi. Arriving just in time to block Orochi's final attack from claiming Nagi. Nagi carries Shiranui back to the village where she dies from her wounds dealt by Lechku and True Orochi. 100 years later, Amaterasu is reborn with no memory of what had transpired.

When Amaterasu's power is fully restored in her final battle with Yami, she is also restored to her true form, taking on the appearance of Shiranui.

Trivia

  • One of the Karmic Transformers (Karmic Transformer 7) gives Amaterasu the appearance of Shiranui throughout the entire game, although not her full powers.
  • In the PlayStation 2 original version; Shiranui (like Amaterasu) is genderless. But, due to Amaterasu based of the sun goddess of the Shinto religion, and Shiranui being Amaterasu's past self, Shiranui is often said to be female. However, in the Wii-version, Shiranui is stated to be male; thus the opposite gender of Amaterasu, which causes some confusion.
