The Clay Drummer (「埴輪鼓舞」?; Hainawa Kobu) is a type of demon encountered in Ōkami. It belongs to the Clay Army category of demons.

The Clay Drummer is first encountered at Shinshu Field (100 years ago) during Amaterasu's trip beyond the Spirit Gate. The Clay Drummer has Moon Tribe-like lines all over its body, except that the lines are of a yellow color instead of pulsing neon blue. The Clay Drummer carries a drum on its back, similar to the Yellow Imp.

In burial ceremonies of great figures, human martyrs are buried with the deceased so that they can serve that person in the afterlife. However, these martyrs may sometimes be replaced by clay figures representing them. Unfortunately, during Orochi's wake, these martyr imitation are animated due to the demon's dark power, and then got manipulated[1].

Bestiary entry

  1. "Clay figures were created to be buried in mounds in place of the martyr whom they represent.
They move now only due to Orochi's dark power.
Destroy them quickly and end their cruel manipulation."

The Clay Drummer is different to other demons of the burrowing type is that while it is underground, it can use its raised drumsticks to attack. When it emerges, quickly scribble the Celestial Brush over it to temporarily blind the demon and prompt it to flail its arms blindly. Use Veil of Mist for safety, and approach the demon to use Golden Fury and Brown Rage to farm it. Then, use the Thief's Glove to strike the demon, clearing away the ink blinding it. The Clay Drummer would use its drum to launch a blast, which can be parried by a Sub-Reflector counterattack, and would severely damage the demon should the counter connects. Deal out several attacks to kill the demon, then use Veil of Mist as its Floral Finisher.

  • The Clay Drummer and other demons of the Clay Army category are based on the Haniwa, terracotta figures during the Kofun period (3rd to 6th century AD) of Japanese history.
  • Alongside the Bucket Namahage, the Clay Drummer can attack while it is burrowed underground.
