The Blade Namahage is a type of demon encountered in Ōkami. It belongs to the Namahage category of demons.

Description

The Blade Namahage is first encountered at Kamui, outside of Oki's hut, alongside some normal Namahage. The Blade Namahage is a simian-like creature in nature, which explains its behavior of jumping and moving around on all fours, monkey-like screeches and its body-covering hair. Its face is a crimson mask of an oni with the typical two horns on the forehead, fangs and expression of the eyes. It is a native to the Northern Lands, thus to accommodate to the harsh weather, the demon is dressed in a set of straw raincoat, which consists of a body coat, waist plating, shoulderguards and a set of four guards for the wrists and shins. The Blade Namahage's most notable feature, however, is true to its name: its weapon of choice, a large cleaver whose design is somewhat distantly and loosely similar to a naginata. The weapon has a long wooden pole as the handle, which is the length of approximately a man, and grafted onto it is a cleaver blade. It is quite round and large, with a not very pointed tip and a large edge, with the sharpened section taking up almost half of the blade's width.

Background

The Blade Namahage is very dependent on its weapon. A legend holds that a samurai tried to vanquish the Blade Namahage. With a nearby brush, he destroyed its blade while it was distracted. The Namahage, with its weapon lost, fled the scene and promised to return.

Bestiary entry

"They say you should play dead if confronted by a Namahage,
but it can be quite fearsome to hide in plain sight of an armed foe.
A legend tells of a samurai that tried to banish the Namahage.
He attacked its blade with a nearby brush while it was distracted.
Without its weapon, it grew afraid and left, promising to reform."

Strategy

Immediately when a Blade Namahage emerges, Amaterasu has to quickly close up upon it and use Golden Fury, Brown Rage and the Thief's Glove to farm it (the hidden strike glitch is not recommended, as if it is used, then the demon would have enough remaining health to survive the following counterattack). Then, Amaterasu has to scribble over it with her Celestial Brush, causing it to flail its arms blindly so that a Sub-Reflector counterattack can be used to immediately kill it. Use Galestorm as its Floral Finisher.
